Edit Your Writing Like a Professional - ProWritingAid Review

Updated: Jul 7, 2019

I am in love with this editing program. My only regret is that I didn't know about it while working on my first three novels.

When digging around online, you never know what's a good value for the money. Or what will actually prove helpful. I've dumped a lot of hard-earned money on things that didn't really live up to the expectation. But with ProWritingAid, my expectations were exceeded. Let's dive in to what exactly ProWritingAid is, and how it can help you improve your manuscript!

This is my MS Word toolbar to show you all of the ProWritingAid options.

Options Galore

When I first started using ProWritingAid, I was blown away by the amount of fine-tooth combing you can do. There's so many options to choose from, depending on where you feel you want to polish. Each option goes through your full manuscript looking for specific issues (style, readability, overused words, grammar, punctuation, etc.). I tend to start from the left and work my way across. I still remember the first time I looked through The Day I Died. I almost had to pick my jaw up from the floor. There were so many issues! Mind you, I'd already gone through the manuscript twice on my own. So here I was, thinking that the program wasn't going to catch much because it was already polished. WRONG!

Here's an example of ProWritingAid's technology. It's able to scan your entire manuscript and catch confused words. As a writer, when you're engrossed in typing a story, you might miss common issues like this. As you can see, I do! This saved me the embarrassment of readers finding it first.

Another feature I'd like to share is the ability to catch overused words. I was shocked to see how often I'd included the word 'was' when writing in first-person past tense. When initially going through and reading it aloud, I didn't notice it. But once you know it's there, it's hard not to get hung up on these errors. The program is like another set of eyes. As writers, we often see our story different from readers. You don't want to toss out work that hasn't been edited or it'll come back to haunt you in the form of negative reviews.

You might be thinking to yourself, "I don't need this, I can edit it myself." But I encourage you to try the free version at least once to see what it catches. I'm going to guess that you'll be surprised when you do.

The Cons

While I could rave about ProWritingAid all day, I always want to be upfront and transparent with any issues I find when trying something. As with any artificial editing, you may find some inaccuracies. Never agree with everything the program suggests you change until reading it yourself to see if it fits. There's times when I've had some bizarre suggestions appear because it didn't understand my creative writing style.

Here's an example:

As you can see, the suggestion is a mess. I'm not sure I've ever seen 'them'll' in any creative writing. Always read through any suggestions before clicking to accept what they recommend. Though this isn't all too common, it does happen from time to time.

The good thing to take from the above example is that it does still provide you with a little summary (beneath the suggestion) that explains 'why' it's flagging for an error. In the above scenario, it caught a passive verb that didn't flow well. Using that information, I can choose to re-write the sentence myself--or keep it the same.

Pricing

ProWritingAid offers a free and paid versions. There's a few differences between them:

The above price brackets give you an idea of what each option offers. Try the free version to see how great this program is, but keep in mind that you're limited on the amount of words you can edit. The Premium membership will allow you to use their add-ons to edit your full manuscript with an unlimited amount of words.

Though they do have annual plans, I highly recommend the lifetime license. Instead of worrying about renewals each year, you pay 1 flat rate to get ProWritingAid permanently. This is especially helpful if you plan to write multiple books since it keeps everything worry-free in the future.
